Easing the Pain of Flying with Kids

Stepping on a plane with kids in tow can be a terrifying experience for many parents who have no choice but to take their tots along. Crying, irritable, and screaming children can be uncomfortable and distracting for other passengers. How do you avoid this scene when it seems to be a totally impossible situation?

Keeping kids happy while traveling takes some preparation but it is well worth it in the long run. Of course, there are no guarantees that they will stay quiet the whole time. However, planning for those times when you think your child will be fussy or grumpy may just do the trick.

The first thing that you need to do is to make sure you have a bag full of all of the comforts of home, at least as much as possible. Anything that your child loves such as their favorite blanket or stuffed toy, sippy cups or bottles filled with up with juice or milk, snacks such as Cheerios, teething rings, crayons and coloring books, books for reading, and even music that they can listen to on headphones. All of these are great distractions to keep them occupied during the flight.

For a toddler or older child, take them out shopping before the trip so they can pick out a new toy or book to take with them. It will be something new for them to enjoy during the flight.

Of course, don’t forget the essentials. You may be so worried about taking items that keep them busy that you may forget about things such as diapers, baby wipes, and medications that your child may need. Make checklist to be sure everything you need is in the bag.

Make it a fun time for your kids. Beforehand, talk to them about how much fun it will be on the plane, but also make it real to them. Talk about respecting other people, if they are old enough to understand even just a little bit. Keep it positive and hopefully they will see this as a fun thing to experience. In addition, choosing to ignore their bad behavior during the flight is not a good idea. If others around you see that you have the ‘I don’t care what my child does’ attitude, then it makes it worse for everyone involved.

Of course, babies are a little different. Just do the best you can to keep them happy with lots of cuddling and love.

It is also recommended that you schedule your flight according to your child’s schedule. Does your child get cranky during a particular time of the day? Avoiding those times may make a big difference. You may even want to book the flight when he or she usually sleeps.

Taking all of these into consideration will hopefully ease your tension for both you and your child while taking to the skies.
